Rubella-Specific IgM Antibodies in Postnatal Infection

A total of 214 serum specimens of postnatal rubella infected cases were determined for persistence of rubella-specific IgM antibodies, using solid-phase immunosorbent hemadsorp­ tion (SPIHAd) test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Initially, 148 blood samples were obtained from 77 patients comprising 74 females and 3 males. All patients were clinical rubella cases whose sera were confirmed by serodiagnosis. The remaining 66 sera were taken from 26 of these rubella cases in a 7-month follow-up study. By SPIHAd, IgM antibodies were initially demonstrable on the second day after rash, and rubella IgM could be detected in all sera tested bet­ ween 6 days and S weeks, and 2144% of sera collected between S weeks and 3 months. By ELISA,IgM antibodies were found in all of 3 sera tested in the 7th'week and 82% (8/11) ofsera obtained in the 12th week.
